TUK TUK Thai Boat Noodle Restaurant - Imago

Personally visited by Sabah Discovery

Green curry chicken was one of our favourites at TUK TUK Imago, but the Tomyam prawns fell short: the flesh was loose and lacked the fresh sweetness we expected. Several sides and dessert worked well, making this a mixed visit rather than an all-round recommendation.

We had noticed queues on earlier visits past TUK TUK at Imago, and this busy lunch meant a wait of about 25 minutes. The bright blue TukTuk at the entrance gave the place a strong Thai street-style visual, but the meal itself turned out to be a mix of dishes we would repeat and one we found disappointing.

The Tomyam was the weak point. Our value set cost RM55.90 at the time and included seven prawns. Their freshness did not meet our expectations: once peeled, the flesh felt loose and lacked the fresh sweetness we wanted. The broth was mild, mainly sour and almost without heat. We had not specified a spice level, so our practical advice would be to ask explicitly for more heat if that is what you enjoy. The prawns, however, were a separate disappointment that a spicier broth would not have addressed.

Green curry chicken was much more convincing. We already love green curry, and the rich, creamy coconut flavour made this one of the strongest dishes of the visit, especially with white rice.

The papaya salad was crisp, refreshing, well seasoned and appetising. The chicken wings had a crisp coating and good seasoning, while the kangkong was a solid supporting dish. We ordered the Thai milk tea less sweet, and that level suited us without losing the strong tea flavour.

We chose a small bowl of boat noodles to sample. The noodles reminded us of a Maggi-style texture, and the portion was small. It was an interesting dish to try, though it was not our main reason to return.

Mango sticky rice unexpectedly arrived before the mains. If you want dessert afterwards, leave a note when ordering or order it later. We liked the amount of mango, the substantial texture of the warm sticky rice and the sweet-salty coconut milk that balanced it.

The original visit also involved a buggy membership-app registration process. Its discount combinations belonged to that historical visit and are not current offers here. Likewise, RM55.90 records the set price then.

There was enough we enjoyed to make us willing to return for other dishes, including red curry. Green curry would be on our order again, but we would not recommend the Tomyam prawns based on this meal.

Imago TUK TUK

Sabah Discovery’s Take

Mixed experience

Green curry stood out, Tomyam prawns did not

We would return for the rich green curry and to try other dishes, including red curry. Mango sticky rice and several sides worked well, but the loose-textured Tomyam prawns lacked the freshness we expected, and the broth was too mild for our taste.
